Tony will present a brief history of the genus Gasteria resulting in the 38 taxa recognised today. His talk will illustrate each taxon, both in habitat and culture, highlighting their key characteristics and aspects of cultivation and propagation of specific plants.

Gasterias are succulent plants closely related to aloes that are named for their stomach-shaped flowers. Most are endemic to South Africa with just a couple straying into Namibia and Swaziland (now known as Eswatini ). They are relatively rare in habitat but quite common in the nursery trade, although the more recent discoveries are only available from specialist sellers.

Tony has been growing cacti and other succulents for 45 years since his University days. He has a diverse collection of plants in his greenhouses on the North Downs in Kent (UK) but specializes in several genera of plants including mammillaria, small opuntias, adromischus, gasteria, and cleistocactus.

He is the Treasurer of the Haworthia Society, Chairman of the Tephrocactus Study Group, Chairman of the BCSS Branch at Dartford, and is also a moderator of the BCSS Forum. He gives frequent talks at branches all over the UK and is a National Show Judge.
