Water-wise Aloe Hybrids at the University of Pretoria

By Jason Sampson
Tuesday, June 16, 2020 – 7:00 pm Pacific Time

NOTE: This month’s presentation will be held online. Zoom login information below. Our June show-and-sale and other in-person events are suspended until further notice.

Jason Sampson is the Curator of the Manie van der Schijff Botanical Garden, a division of the Plant and Soil Sciences Department at the University of Pretoria in South Africa. The myriad succulent based gardens across the University’s campuses are his brainchild and an important part of the institution’s living plant collections.

Taken together, the gardens are possibly the most extensive, ongoing xeriscaping program in Africa. At the core of these designs are the locally bred, flowering aloes, which can be traced back to pioneering efforts in the 1960’s and ‘70’s by South African hobbyist breeders, and continuing development by professional plantsmen.

This talk will explore the history of the water wise campus garden drive, from its inception to the present, with background on the hybridization programs behind the “ambassador” Aloe’s, and then will reveal the future prospects of the planting program and the collection.
