Succulent Insights

By Jon Schwark, Daryl du Charme and Walker Young
Tuesday, June 19, 7:00 pm

Our society has lots of new members, and we thought it would be nice to devote our June meeting to an overview of succulents and how to grow them. The meeting will be in 3 parts.

First, president Jon Schwark will present a whirlwind tour of Succulent plant history, evolution and taxonomy that will answer questions many beginners didn’t even know they had. What are succulents and cacti? Why do we call them that? How are they related to each other and other plants?

Second, our past president Daryl Du Charme will give a re-potting demonstration, with explanations about soil mixes used for growing succulents and selecting an appropriate pot.

Third, Walker Young, the assistant curator at the Ruth Bancroft Garden, will explain about propagating succulents – removing offsets, taking cuttings, growing plants from leaves, and growing plants from seed.

Come join us for this session and help us roll out the welcome mat for our new members. You might even learn something! We will include a wrap-up of our big annual Show & Sale.

For the Show & Tell table, bring one plant you like.

Please bring baked goodies, fruit, snack food or a beverage if your last name begins with the letters S to Z and A to B, and any other members who would like to contribute this month.
