With Hazel Taylor
Tuesday, May 18, 2021 – 7:30 pm Pacific Time
NOTE: This month’s presentation will be held online. Zoom login information below. Our in-person meeting are suspended until further notice.
This month’s program will be the next installment of Hazel Taylor’s journey through the Western Cape (we saw the first part last September). We begin where we left off, in Nieuwoudtville, which has a reputation as the “Bulb Capital of the World”, and then head to nearby Papkuilsfontein, which boasts a range of succulents including Adromischus filicaulis and Anacampseros retusa as well as orchids and lizards. We will move south towards Ceres, through the eastern edge of the Tankwa Karoo National Park, which contains the attractive Aloe falcata, Crassula barbata and some unusual wildlife. Near Ceres we find treasures such as Euphorbia silenifolia and the Peacock Moraea (Moraea villosa), before moving on to the de Hoop Nature Reserve to see sand dune plants, as antelopes and birds. On our journey back along the coast to Cape Town, we encounter a surprise Gasteria, not seen by our guides on their previous visits.
Dr. Taylor has been in the British Cactus and Succulent Society (BCSS) and its predecessor for over 50 years. She was a founding member of the Bromley branch, and is currently its Chairman. After studying biochemistry and completing a PhD in bacterial genetics, she later decided to complement her scientific training with a financial qualification and embarked on a career in finance. She currently serves on the BCSS Shows Committee.
