Looking for Succulents in All the Wrong Places

Everyone knows Baja California, the Sonoran Desert, South Africa and Socotra are creeping and crawling with succulents. But would you believe there are succulents that thrive above 17,000 feet in Tibet? Or on the Altai Mountains of Siberia where temperatures can plunge to -60F in the winter? What about the beaches of Greece or New Zealand? Pakistan? The Caucasus? This month Panayoti Kelaidis will surprise us with succulents from many places where you would never expect to find them – and many are outstanding garden plants. But perhaps the biggest surprise in his presentation is finding a fantastic nursery specializing in hardy American cacti in Swabia, not far from Switzerland! Succulents are everywhere…not just where you expect to find them.

Delosperma-Copper-Spinner-QuincePanayoti Kelaidis is a plant explorer and currently Director of Outreach with Denver Botanic Gardens. He began his career at DBG in 1980 as curator of the Rock Alpine Garden, where he designed and oversaw the initial plantings, which Garden Design Magazine has deemed the best public rock garden in North America.

Panayoti is also well known for his plant introductions, including many showy hardy ice plants. Several dozen of these are now available at garden centers across America and in other parts of the world, and almost all were either collected by Panayoti in South Africa, or hybrids or selections he made at Denver Botanic Gardens. He has also introduced hundreds of native ornamentals from throughout the Western United States to general horticulture.

Please plan to join the meeting by 7pm if you haven’t used zoom before, as it takes a moment to download and install. Everyone else is welcome early as well to chit-chat before we start.

The formal presentation will begin at 7:30pm.

Zoom doesn’t run in your browser. It is a desktop app, and there are also mobile apps you can download in your device’s app store to watch on a phone or tablet.

If it’s your first time using zoom, click the link below and it will automatically take you through a download process. If you already have Zoom installed, you can click and go straight in, or  open zoom and use the meeting ID and password to get in. At some point you may be asked a question about audio. “Join with computer audio” is the right choice. Don’t worry, you can keep your microphone muted until you are ready to speak.
