Program Description

The Mojave Desert has a stark beauty in mid-winter, when almost nothing is in flower, but the drama of the landscape and its sculptural botanic residents are on full display.

Just before the pandemic in February 2020, noted South African plant scientist Sean Gildenhuys was visiting from South Africa to do a series of talks for various southern California succulent groups, and it seemed unthinkable to let him head back without seeing any of our New World succulent habitats – so Walker Young and Brian Kemble whisked him off to the Mojave. Walker’s presentation will also include images from previous trip to the area along the Nevada-California border in the company of another South African, Gideon Smith, showing the Mojave at the opposite time of year, in the heat of August.

Walker Young is the Assistant Curator at the Ruth Bancroft Garden in Walnut Creek, where he maintains the greenhouse plant collection and does many tasks in the garden, from rock work to tree work to bed renovations. He is a Bay Area native, and likes to travel to see and photograph succulents in habitat, not to mention growing them here at home.

The show-and-tell table this month will feature Mesembs, as many are in growth this time of year. Attendees are encouraged to bring these, or anything in bloom, for discussion at the start of the meeting.
