Program Description

Jackson will start by introducing the genus Sulcorebutia, a group of cacti beloved by collectors, that has more recently been included in Rebutia and Weingartia. After a quick look at their taxonomy and biology he will explain the special care these plants need to do well and put on their large flowering displays. Finally he will conclude with a “virtual tour of Bolivia”: a slide show of plants from his collection grouped by locality to reflect which species can be seen in the vicinity of one another in nature.

Speaker Bio

Jackson Burkholder grew up attending Colorado Cactus and Succulent Society events, and is now a board member of the Cactus and Succulent Society of America. He studied Horticulture at Colorado State University with a minor in Botany, and is finishing his master’s thesis at Texas State University on the anatomy of cactus extrafloral nectaries. He is also working on a book about cactus biology and cultivation directed towards a hobbyist audience.

In his spare time, Jackson is starting Precision Cactus Growers, a nursery that will specialize in producing cactus seeds and plants with collection and location data. His plants are distributed between a small greenhouse and multiple cold frames where his current focus is on South American cacti that thrive in the high elevations and cool nights of Colorado.

No show and tell this month. The lecture will be shown live at the Show and Sale in the auditorium.

Current SF Covid requirements for our venue: Masks and vaccination strongly recommended. We will keep doors open to ensure adequate ventilation.
