Terrestrial Bromeliads

With Andy Siekkinen

Tuesday, April 18, 2023 – 7:00 pm Pacific Time (California)

NOTE: Members and visitors can attend in person in San Francisco, or watch on Zoom.

Program Description

Join us for an evening with Andy Siekkinen where we will take a broad look at the many genera of succulent bromeliads – going well beyond the well known Hechtias and Dyckias.

The Bromeliaceae is a large family of monocots from the Americas, including many plants that grow epiphytically as well as ones that grow with their roots in the ground. Most of the succulent species are in the latter group, commonly referred to as the terrestrial bromeliads. Terrestrial bromeliads grow in a wide variety of habitats and require different conditions. In this presentation we’ll go through the range of terrestrial bromeliads–from mesic to xeric. The plants will be shown in habitat (when possible) and in cultivation, with discussion of how to grow them.

Andy Siekkinen is a San Diego based botanist who studies the genus Hechtia. He has been involved with the description of over a dozen species, with many more in progress. He recently launched a website for his nursery: www.AndysBromeliads.com

For the show and tell table this month, In-person attendees are encouraged to bring Terrestrial Bromeliads, or anything that looks good or is in bloom.

Featured Grower: Our speaker will have plants available.

Snack table: Snacks are back! It works on the honor system – we suggest bringing something to share every couple of months if you partake regularly. Please clean up what you brought at the end of the night.

Dress to stay warm: We will keep doors open to ensure adequate ventilation.
