Program Description

Join us to explore the fascinating variety of miniature succulents from the Succulent Karoo and adjacent areas. The Succulent Karoo refers to a broad area of succulent-rich semi-desert in western South Africa and the southern edge of adjacent Namibia, including well-known plant hot-spots such as the Little Karoo. Rob will be showing photos taken on seven trips to this area since 2001.

Rob has been growing cacti and succulents for 44 years, and has been involved in various local societies for most of that time. He currently belongs to the Central Coast Cactus & Succulent Society, based in San Luis Obispo. He was a founding member of this club, as well as its first President and first Show & Sale Chairman. In addition, he is a certified judge at cactus shows and has served on the Board of the Cactus & Succulent Society of America.

In addition to Rob’s interest in cacti and succulents, he enjoys photography and travel, and these interests have come together in a wonderful way during his botanical explorations of the western US, Mexico, South America, Africa, Madagascar and the Middle East. He has written articles for the Cactus and Succulent Journal, and also contributed photos to various articles and books. He speaks regularly at the monthly meetings of various succulent societies, and has been a featured speaker at the 2019 CSSA Convention, as well as at the Huntington Succulent Symposium.

For the show and tell table this month, Miniature succulents, especially from Southern Africa, to go with the program. As always, anything in bloom or that looks good..

Featured grower: our speaker, Rob Skillin will have a wide selection from his private nursery.

Snack table: Snacks are back! It works on the honor system – we suggested you bring something to share every couple of months if you partake regularly. Please clean up what you brought at the end of the night.

Current SF Covid requirements for our venue: Masks and vaccination recommended. We will keep doors open to ensure adequate ventilation so dress to keep warm.
