By Brian Kemble
Tuesday, May 19, 7:00 pm Pacific Time
NOTE: This month’s presentation will be held online. Zoom login information below. Our June show-and-sale and other in-person events are cancelled until further notice.
In this presentation (our first online meeting of the San Francisco Succulent and Cactus Society), VP Brian Kemble will take us on a trip through the western part of South Africa, which is the part with winter rainfall and dry summers, much like the climate in California. The rainfall in this area decreases as you go northward, much as our rainfall here decreases going southward. This is a region with many wonderful succulents, including aloes, haworthias, gasterias, euphorbias and lots of mesembs.
Brian has given many talks for our society over the years, but this will be his first time doing one online. The reason for taking this step is of course the shelter-in-place restrictions which are now in effect, but this opens up new possibilities for our meetings. There are disadvantages to having the meeting online (we don’t get to mingle and chat with each other, and we can’t have a plant table to peruse and take home treasures from), but there are advantages as well: we don’t need to fight the traffic to get to the meeting, and can even attend from afar if we are away somewhere.
Zoom Download and Login Instructions:
Please plan to join the meeting at 7pm if you haven’t used zoom before, as it takes a moment to download and install. Everyone else is welcome early as well to chit-chat before we start. Two tricks will help with the login. First, you want to “join with audio” as otherwise you wont be able to hear. Don’t worry, you can mute your microphone later. The second trick is you will need the password, which is just the initials of our organization in lower case: “sfscs”.
Zoom doesn’t run in your browser. It is a desktop app, and there are also mobile apps you can download in your device’s app store.
If it’s your first time using zoom, click the link below and it will automatically take you through a download process. If you already have Zoom installed, you can just open it and use the meeting ID and password to get in.
