Treasures of the Sierra Madre: San Luis Potosi, Tamaulipas, and
southern Nuevo Leon

Location: Auditorium in the San Francisco County Fair Building, 1199 9th Ave (at Lincoln Way), San Francisco MAP
SFSCS Vice-President Brian Kemble has returned again and again to Mexico to investigate its amazingly rich flora of succulent plants. This program covers 3 states in northeastern Mexico, an area where the Sierra Madre Oriental is a dominating geographical feature. In a presentation a couple of years ago, Brian showed photos of the same mountain range farther south, in the states of Hidalgo, Queretaro and Guanajuato, so this might be considered a northward extension of the area covered in that talk. Plants encountered include Agaves, many different kinds of cacti, Echeverias, Hechtias and Dasylirions.
In addition to being VP of the San Francisco Succulent & Cactus Society, Brian is the Curator at the Ruth Bancroft Garden in Walnut Creek. If you have not visited this Bay Area treasure house of succulents, you should make it a point to pay a visit. The garden is open to the public every day of the week except Monday. Learn more at the website (www. ruthbancroftgarden.org). If you go to the website and scroll down to the bottom, you will find the Plant Highlight of the month, written by Brian. At the end of the highlight is a place where you can click to open the Plant Highlight archives, featuring photos & write-ups gong back for almost 14 years. Brian also periodically posts photos of the garden's plants on Tumblr; to see these, go to: ruthbancroftgarden. tumblr.com
Brian will be the February Featured Grower.
What to bring:
For the Show & Tell table, we will feature Kalanchoe on the succulent side and on the cactus side we will feature an assortment of smaller genera native to the northeastern part of Mexico: Lophophora, Turbinicarpus, Pelecyphora, Strombocactus and Aztekium. Of course, feel free to bring in anything else that is looking good!
Please bring baked goodies, fruit, snack food or a beverage if your last name begins with the letters C to H, and any other members who would like to contribute this month.
